Curriculum Overview

At Compass Academy, we have developed our own Standards of Learning, which align closely with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL). We have intentionally adopted the SOL to better meet the needs of our community. A common saying among parents is 'each child, each year,' reflecting our commitment to making thoughtful academic choices. This approach ensures flexibility for students to transfer in and out of public schools without academic disruption. Additionally, the SOL provides valuable pacing guidelines. We want to clarify that we utilize the SOL curriculum framework, not the SOL assessments.

Compass Academy students learn in a hands on environment

Rigorous & Differentiated

At Compass Academy, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where students are encouraged to think independently, solve complex problems, and critically analyze the content they encounter. We understand that each child begins his or her educational journey from a unique starting point and may follow different paths to reach shared goals. Our skilled teachers are skilled at adapting their teaching methods and pivoting as needed to ensure that every student has the support and resources necessary to succeed. By recognizing and nurturing individual strengths and learning styles, we strive to help every child achieve their full potential.

Vertically articulated pacing guide

A vertically aligned pacing guide serves as a comprehensive map of information, detailing the how, why, and when of our teaching practices. This guide enables teachers to connect their instruction to students' prior knowledge and future academic goals, ensuring a cohesive and progressive learning experience. By providing a structured framework, it helps educators plan and deliver lessons that build on existing understanding while preparing students for upcoming challenges.
